Web design: Docomomo international architecture conference

Context

Docomomo is an international organisation dedicated to the documentation and conservation of buildings, places and communities of the Modern Movement. Its mission is to safeguard when important buildings of the modern movement are under threat, as well as to exchange ideas related to conservation technologies, to promote responsibility towards architectural heritage, among others.

Since its creation in 2004, Docomomo Chile has carried out an intense programme of dissemination and valorisation of modern heritage, documenting more than 2,000 cases throughout the country.

Based on this important social and historical mission, the 18th Docomomo International Conference will be held in Chile in 2024, with an emphasis on current global challenges. It is the first edition of this international event to be held in South America, and it will be held in Chile, a key territory due to the particular relationship between its geography and architecture.

Discovery

I was given the challenge of shaping the virtual space where all the content oriented to the international participants of the event would be stored. This objective implied taking care that the website would allow an adequate navigation, the necessary information to apply for papers and the contents that would allow all the international participants to travel to Chile in an informed and safe way.

The client’s requirement in relation to the website was not minor, as it had a large volume of information to present in the main menu and internal pages. After meetings between myself and the client, I managed to refine the navigation architecture for a fluid and intuitive navigation.

In terms of design, the client wanted the website to have a visual interface that inherited the typography, colours, shapes and layouts of the printed material previously generated for this event.

The website required a design thought for three different segments: organisers, speakers and attendees.

For the organisers, it was necessary to think of a functional backend design, allowing the greatest possible autonomy in terms of content loading.

As for the speakers, it is necessary that the front of the website allows a simple and optimal interaction to get information and apply with their expository sessions and upload applications.

Solution

I was up against the clock, so I used agile methodologies to take the project forward and deliver a working version of the product at an early stage, while continuing with the development of the full version.

I created the sections with the most relevant content for this first stage, with information about the organisation and relevant content for the participants. In this way we scaled up the project, progressively enabling the different pages until the final version was completed.

Through the application platform associated with the website, the Docomomo Chile organisation received 512 abstract applications to participate in this congress, indicating a success in terms of the objectives proposed for the use of this platform.

Currently, the website continues to be active, offering information on the events and activities taking place within the framework of this international event.
